Autism Treatment – Light and Sound Sensitivity and Autism

One of the things I’ve seen over the years with kids on the Autism Spectrum is some of the sensitivities that they have. Whether it’s sound sensitivity, or even light sensitivity, that can be quite problematic because I’ve actually had some kids who need to wear earphones just to muffle sound so that they can be outside of the home. And inside of the home can be a problem if there’s a loud TV set or a vacuum cleaner or whatnot that might be going on.

A couple things to check for, one, yeast can be a problem, I have seen heightened sensitivity when yeast is present so an organic acid test to look for arabinose or other biomarkers for yeast could be problematic. Another thing that could be going on is some type of mineral deficiency, particularly magnesium. Magnesium many times, when it’s deficient, can lead to a heightened sense of irritation and agitation within the body. And this is something that has helped light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, when magnesium is replaced. Now, when you’re looking to replace magnesium, it can be a bit tricky, ideally it could be given IV so that you bypass the digestive tract. Not always practical for all families, so a couple things you can do.

You can try to take it orally. Now there’s different types of magnesium. Magnesium glycinate is a rapidly absorbed form of magnesium. This could be useful, two hundred fifty, four hundred milligrams for most kids, usually over time you can see some benefit. Magnesium citrate is OK but magnesium can have a laxative effect so you sometimes can’t go too high on magnesium citrate. So magnesium glycinate is probably the best thing to give if you’re looking to use magnesium to nullify some of the sensitivity issues. You can also do Epsom salt baths, some magnesium sulfate which is in the Epsom salt bath. One to two cups in the bath water at night or you can do Epsom salt cream, one, one and a half teaspoons applied to the skin twice daily may be beneficial as well.

So, a couple things to consider when you’re looking at sensitivities and I think those are probably the main things that we’ll try is to some magnesium and also think of yeast possibilities. Now there is a treatment called Auditory Integration Therapy, AIT, which is also helpful for sound sensitivity problems, auditory processing and whatnot, so that’s something you can look to as well. AIT Therapy if this is an ongoing problem for your child. Light sensitivity, again, many times can be helped by magnesium so magnesium tends to play a role in stress and irritability factors with respect to kids on the spectrum.
